Walking 14000KM to get water might sound absurd and friction but this is the truth of thousands of females in a district of Barmer in Rajasthan India.
This Story is about one of the thousands of villages in India where drinking water is like a dream to them the situation is so worst that if you tell the elders of the village that a thing called the ocean exists they won’t believe, cause for a small amount of water they have struggle thought their life so Let me take you to a journey to this village and show you how the lives of these people are.
Imagine that you are in the middle of a desert but not the kind you have seen in the paintings and movies but a kind where people have lived there for generations I don’t know what you will call it but I call this the Living Desert.
It’s 5 a.m. and I see women and women from houses coming out and going somewhere I thought that the village didn’t have any toilets so they were going out for the morning routine but when I looked closely they all had containers in their hands and the head I asked that were are they going one of them replied “ Going to get the water” so I ask ok but this time in the morning how far is it and she replied “ its about 2.5 Km” and how many times do you go I asked “4 times or 5 times in the morning and the evening” she replied. I got socked when I asked how much water they carry at a time “20 to 25 liters at a time” she replied
Carrying such weight on their heads and walking such much distance was just unimaginable I was blown away that in such a progressive world, there are places where people have to go such lengths to just get their basic needs such as Water.
Old grandma aged 75 years old, walked the same distance for about 60 years and still has to cause there is no one in the house to look after the 7-year-old Salim and the livestock. She carries water on her hunch back and walks with the stick even at this age.
Poonam 28 a woman married to her husband doesn’t know that she has to walk daily just to get water this is at that time when she is 6 months pregnant and needs rest and care cause of such extreme she lost her first child due to lack of health care facilities and she can’t even complain about it cause if she doesn’t bring water she can’t cook a meal for herself and family and this does not only apply to older women, girls of age 13 to 14 they have to go to water wells to get water so I thought that they don't have schools in the locality but that was not the case when I asked to a 15-year-old about this she replied: “ what is the use of school if I can’t even drink water so it’s better to bring water than studying”.
All these women walk around 14000Km to get drinking water, Do you know what else is 14000km it’s the distance between INDIA AND AMERICA.
All these things are happening when some parts of India are facing the worst flood in the last 40 years some places have declared Nation digesters.
I won’t give my opinion and solution cause it is not my job The government and social workers are trying to help as much as possible but as always the corrupted systems of the nation do not see the pain and suffering of the people.
